Renoir's Margot Berard
This portrait of 5 year old Margot Brerard was painted in 1879. This is my very first portrait painting in oil. I hope it reflects the immediacy of Renoir.

Penelope
I drew the bust of Penelope from the life size statue by the American sculptor Franklin Simmons. The story of Penelope as the faithful wife of Oydsseus is reflected in her patient face. She kept her eyes downcast to avoid other suitors during her husband's absence.
The actual work sits on a sculpted chair at the de Young Museum, SF. There is another one at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
I used a subtractive method and Russian sauce ground and then accented with charcoal and pastel.

Stephen De Staebler: Matter + Spirit
The current Stephen De Staebler exhibit at the deYoung in SF is beautifully staged. The sculptures seem to engage with the shadows that surround them.
Watch this u-tube video to learn more about Stephen De Staebler.
My ode to his wonderful work is a three color conte crayon drawn on a coffee and tea stained ground.

Helmut Head, Makonde People, Mozambique
This helmut head from the Makonde People of Mozambique appears harmless from the side view, but walk around to the front and be prepared for it's strength.

Bust of Albert Ludovici - Aime-Jules Dalou - Legion of Honor
This image was drawn on gessoed paper with coffee and transfers. The words "without words" and "no image" are tongue in cheek. The model is a terra cotta bust of Albert Ludovici sculpted by Dalou in the mid 1800's.

Chinois Man 1872

I love this bronze, Le Chinois 1872 by Carpeaux, from the Legion of Honor Museum in SF.The head is so graceful that I made two versions of it from different sides. The paper is stained with coffee and the medium is pastel.
This work was just accepted into the Marin County Fair.

Another view of this enigmatic man. And comments from someone else who thinks the head might be of a woman.

The Broken Pitcher
This famous painting found at the SF Legion of Honor is a detail by William-Adolphe Bouguereau. The complete work painted in 1891 shows a symbolic context for the young girl's sad expression. A broken pitcher represents her loss of virginity. The well pump is the male figure.
My composition is pastel on a tinted ground.

My interpretation of these famous marble sculptures was done using a reduction technique on a background of Russian sauce. They are great side by side companion pieces.http://www.flickr.com/photos/mharrsch/6883427355/

Bernini's Medusa - Interpreted
![]() |
| Medusa |
My Museum Drawing Class had the privilege to draw Bernini's Medusa at the Legion of Honor. I feel transformation of the beautiful woman into a monster is symbolic of our times, there are broken pieces. Yet 400 years later the head remains a thing of beauty, so hope does spring eternal.
This composition is past on gesso ground mixed with pigment.
