This post is a result of an art assignment in a materials and techniques class.  The original photo of Jaxon was painted with four techniques: Silverpoint and paint pigments using egg, oil, and wax.

What does David's look say?  Kylie is just turning two years old.  Is she reacting or expressing?

This child's oil portrait is from a black and white photo of my friend's grandson Jaxson. It was accepted into a juried student show at College of Marin, Kentfield, CA. The size is 20" x 20".

This painting of a child was just accepted into the juried student show at College of Marin for 2017!

I think the judges liked the spontaneity of the brush strokes that you get when working with acrylic paint.  I am glad I didn't try and re-work the painting too much.  Anyone who knows Sophia will recognize her here even though her face is too long.

This acrylic painting is 16" x 20".

My Casino Congo Santeria experience outside of Cienfuegos, Cuba provided many photo opportunities. This boy was so unusual, with his stylized hair and impish grin that I had to try and capture his image.

I would say it is close, but I made him look older. I changed the background to incorporate the image into it.

This is Sophia Rose 18 months.  I painted her in oil from the photograph on the left  in a three hour class. I see where I can make improvements.  Time is everything!

Child Portrait Painting: Cuban Boy from Casino de Congo

I visited the Las Lajas center near Cienfuegos, Cuba in June 2016 and saw this young boy. A member of our tour group had just given him an oversized SF 49rs hat and the boy is showing pride of ownership. The big smile was before the photo.

The background is a colonial blue door typical in Cuba.

LOLITA with tone

I added an extra plate to tone this now too familiar face.  Water color was use under the right jawbone and in the hair.
